Students grace our schools with their personalities and intellect. There are 3 types of visas that students use and they are the:

F -VISA
M - VISA
J - VISA

The F visa is the one immigration law firms hear the most about. Students enter to attend a full course of (academic) study, but need to maintain a residence abroad that they do not intend to abandon. They must study full-time. At the end of their schooling, they are able to work on OPT (=Optional Practical Training) and this allows them to work in their field of study and even receive pay. Many of these students go on to different visas and make the United States their full-time home.

Whereas the F-1 visa is for academic studies, the M-1 visa is for vocational studies. It allows students to study in community or junior college for 12 semester or quarter hours. Students can also attend a postsecondary vocational or business school, but not for a course in language training. It also allows for a vocational or other nonacademic high school curriculum.

The J-1 visa is certainly the richest of visas. It is used for a number of persons, ranging from au pairs to international medical graduates. The only drawback to this visa is that under certain conditions you have a 212(e) requirement. This code section requires you to leave the country for two years after completing your program. It does not apply to everyone.
