Romania to be added to the Visa Waiver Program

On November 3, 2008, DHS (Dept. Homeland Security) Secretary Michael Chertoff initiated the VWP (Visa Waiver Program) with Romania. Once security enhancements detailed in the agreement are in place, Romania will become a member of this elite list of countries who enjoy visa-free travel privileges.
The VWP permits citizens of specific countries to travel to the U.S. for business or pleasure up to 90 days without a visa. The program has been in effect for over 20 years and includes 27 countries in Asia and Europe. However, in 2007, Congress authorized DHS to put tighter controls and requirements on the program. These include information sharing about known and suspected terrorist and lost and stolen passports as well as developing and expanding air marshal programs and better screening procedures.
Currently, the list of VWP countries include Andorra, Australia, Austria, Belgium, Brunei, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Iceland, Ireland, Italy, Japan, Liechtenstein, Monaco, the Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, Portugal, San Marino, Singapore, Slovenia, Sweden, Switzerland, and the United Kingdom.
To participate, individuals from these 27 countries must have an approved machine-readable passport and travel on a Visitor (B) Visa. Other restrictions may apply depending on country of origin.
As Mr. Chertoff stated, “This achievement builds on the strong relationships our nations share and brings us closer . . .” If you have any questions about the VWP or any other immigration matter, you are urged to seek professional council from a highly qualified immigration attorney certified in international law.
