PIMS Verification Required for Certain Nonimmigrant Visas
(06/26/08)

As of November 2007, all visas issued for persons seeking temporary work permits to the U.S. (categories H, L, O, P, and Q) must have their information verified by the PIMS (Petition Information Management Service). This is to confirm that the person’s employer has been approved by CIS (Citizenship and Immigration Service). So, even if a person has an approved I-129 (Petition for Non-Immigrant Worker) and an original I-797 (Approval Notice), he or she must also be approved by PIMS. When an employer’s information is requested by PIMS, the approval process should only take 48 hours. However, applicants are advised to have everything in order long before their appointment date and to anticipate the process to take more than two days to issue their visa.

The primary reason for this new procedure is to verify a person’s name as being correct. However, delays may still occur if a person has filed an I-485 (Application for Adjustment of Status).
